"I am prediabetic and have food allergies (nuts, dairy, and some fruit). Are there any diet plans for someone like me?"

Background Info Hide
Had gestational diabetes 3 yrs ago and have had trouble keeping a healthy weight. I try to eat bread only once a day and fill my plate with veggies and salads. Eat turkey meat instead of red meat as often as I can. Eat lots of chicken. Hardly ever eat potatoes. Have HBP so I need to eat bananas or drink OJ to keep my potatssium up (on hydrochlorothiazide). Eat eggs sometimes with cheese (only dairy I eat). Cannot eat whole grains regularly (I get really bad stomach pains and bloating although doctor tests say I'm not allergic to wheat). Supplements: chromium, garlic, fish oil, flaxseed oil, quercetin, vitamin c, d, and probiotics. My level of activity is mostly running after my two boys. I need to lose 50 lbs to get to 140 although I'd be happy with keeping a steady weight of 160. Was able to lose 20 lbs in 2007 without exercise by lowering my yeast intake and eating almonds for snacks, but now I cannot eat any nuts.

Hi colehleen. I can tell you from personal experience that elimination diets like those necessary with food allergies can be challenging at first but definitely not impossible. I can give you some general guidelines but really the best advice I can give is to encourage you to sit down one-on-one with a registered dietitian. Eating regularly scheduled, well balanced meals is an important first step in slowing the progression of diabetes and losing weight. It's generally recommended to fill half your plate with vegetables and other half with lean meat and a whole grain. Then consider including some milk and fruit during your day. Obviously, you would want to focus on the fruits and other foods that you are not allergic too. Also, the bloating you are experiencing from whole grain foods may just be that you are increasing these foods in your diet too fast. It is recommended to eat more fiber but to increase the amount of fiber eaten slowly, and to drink plenty of water. The dLife website has great information on healthy eating and fiber. But again, I encourage you to sit one-on-one with a registered dietitian. Helping people see that healthy eating even with food allergies and diabetes doesn't have to seem so challenging is what we do! Good luck!
