I've think I've been having some of the symptoms of type 2 but don't want to run to the doctor for symptoms that could be something minor when I don't have the money.Don't get me wrong, diabetes is not minor, but if there was a way of getting an idea if it even is would most definately help. Thank You, Yvonne

Dear Yvonne: I understand your concern with not having health insurance to go to a doctor. There are many inexpensive Glucometers (blood sugar monitoring devices) that you can purchase to measure your blood glucose levels at home. Ask your pharmacist for one that is not very expensive. Test your BG levels at random (different) times each day, and keep a log. If you test first thing in the morning and it's more than 126 mg/dL, OR anytime of the day and it's over 200 mg/dL, that could mean you may have diabetes. Do this for a period of a week or so, and depending on your levels, then you can make a decision to go to the doctor. Also, many cities have free clinics that you may be able to go to get screened. Make sure you check this website for the section on Diagnosis and treatment of Diabetes. Good luck!

Dear thesprout64, There are home tests that can measure the average glucose you have been running for the past 3 months. However, these still cost considerable money for a person who is unemployed and having no health insurance. Do you have a free or low cost clinic in your community where you can have a fasting glucose test and maybe an A1c done. The A1c doesn't need to be done that often. In your case, probably twice a year. Having the test done at a lab will ensure its accuracy. If it is over 6.5, you may wish to make a doctor's appointment and be officially checked out.
