I thank you for your ans. to my leg & feet edema. I am taking 40mg lasix a day and 2.5mg zazoxolyn a week. I know that you don't get a true creatinine clearance on diuretics but this is an awful amt. of urine for 24hrs. I still had edema in feet&lower legs. On 12hrs with 1 lasix & 1/2 Zaroxolyn I still put out 1,850 litres. I am on very little lite salt and use some herbs for flavoring. Not Mrs. Dash either. I've had a Nuclear Heart Stress test to clear me for knee arthroscopy and hadn't had surg. for 46 yrs. Also had an Arterial Venous Pressure on both legs. I have varicrose veins and blame it on that because of return blood flow but how can I expell so much urine in 24 hrs? I don't want to die of CHF. What tests can I have more to determine why the amt. of fluid retention? Serum creat. was norm. Magnesium was 1.4 mg.dl which is low. Am taking 20mg. daily prescrip. potassium also because mine went down to 2.7 (3.5-5.0 norm) Got any answers? I hate living on lasix and checking K+. Kay

Dear fishing lady, You have just described a very complex medical problem. I hope you are in frequent contact with your doctor. Even though you are on a diuretic, you state you still have quite a bit of edema. That means you will probably need more diuretic to bring this down. It's possible that you will need to wear special stockings to help return the blood flow that your varicose veins are not doing well. You may well have congestive heart failure, but I'm am not a physician and cannot diagnose you from the information you have provided. It is important that you be frank with your physician and really ask him/her to explain what your labs are revealing to him and what he sees as the best treatment plan for you. Watching salt is usually a very good idea, so I commend you for doing that already. Some duiretics make the body hold onto potassium and others cause you to excrete it. If you are excreting it, then you might need to be taking potassium supplements and/or eating some high potassium foods in your diet. There are many high potassium foods other than bananas that won't raise your blood sugar. Tomatoes are one. Baked potatoes are very high. So are many fruits. Coffee even contains a lot of potassium. Ask to be referred to a dietitian if you need help incorporating potassium into your diet. And see your physician soon and get some valid answers to your questions.
