Dear plano1234, Type 1 diabetes is not diagnosed by having an elevated blood sugar alone. It is diagnosed by doing some specialized tests to determine if you make insulin and have antibodies to insulin. Did your doctor perform those tests? If not, you need to get them done. You probably needed insulin if your blood sugar was 600. You most likely have type 2 diabetes. We have some people that we can slowly wean off of the insulin onto oral medications. You are right that stress and physical stress of an illness can raise blood sugars. So will your surgery. Type 1 is not usually as associated with stress as a cause of the onset. I suggest you talk to your doctor and get some tests run.

I don't know about type one, but I also was diagonsed on the same day with type 2 & stage 0 breast cancer. Two 1/2 years later and I'm still controlling with diet, exersise & weight loss. My last A1c is 5.3. be sure and sign up for a class & see a dietician. Your body is under stress and you may be eating too many carbs.
