"I am losing the hair on my head in handfuls. Is this a side effect of metformin? Is it a side effect of diabetes?"
Asked By: lsa1map

Background Info Hide
I am newly diagonsed, as of July 09. I take 500 mg of metformin twice a day, I exercise on eliptical, walk or weight train 6-7 days per week for 30 min. I write down everything I eat and I test my bs morning, before and after each meal and at night.

Deaar isa1map, There are no well-conducted scientific studies that support that metformin causes hair loss. There have been some anecdotal or non-scientific reports of metformin contributing to male pattern hair loss. I would say it is not likely to be the cause of your hair loss. Especially if is is coming out in handfuls. Have you discussed this symptom with your physician? It isn't a very common situation to have hair being lossed in handfuls. I encourage you to make an appointment with your physician as soon as possible.

My hairloss has stopped. I am thinking that I was just in such shock when I was diagnosed, that it is stress. I just can't believe that I was diagnosed with type 2. I take have taken good care of myself for most of my life.. It is just since I turned 52 or so (about 1-2 years ago) that I have started to let myself go. The week before I was diagnosed ( I had bs of 293) I ate a whole box of choc chip cookies and a loaf of pepperidge farm garlic bread.. So out of charactur for me. But my cravings were very strong. My doctor does not know why the hairloss but thinks it may be stress also. She gave me a prescription for buspirone and also 30 pills of clonazepam ( as a back up) I have also started meditation. Now, i always control my bs to stay from 89- 125. Infrequently, when I try a new food that doesn't work.. It will go up and I feel it. I start to shake and prespire. I know my sugar is higher than normal. Is that a normal reaction?
