"Type 1 and Glucophage"
Asked By: carrp1
Category: Type 1

Background Info Hide
Im Type 1 and Ive been wearing an insulin pump forever. My 4 hour pstprandial is always good, 2 hour is always bad. Ive tried Symlin and it just makes me sick. My 2 hour with it is great but 4-6 hours are horrible. Ive been redaing about Glucophage and it makes since to me to use: reduce glucose release, reduces glucose absorption and increases insulin sensativity. Do Type 1's use it at all? Thanks, R. Carroll, RN, CCRN.

Although the use of Metformin with Type 1 Diabetes is not Mainstream, it is most certainly done, and can prove beneficial in many ways. Sometimes we get stuck in the rut of thinking patterns that limit possibility, and the more we learn about Diabetes the more we know that “One Size Does Not Fit All.” I commend you for your research, and encourage you in exploration of your options!

Dear carrp1, Using metformin (glucophage) to treat people with type 1 diabetes is not mainstream therapy. I have know some endocrinologists who tried it in people that were overweight type 1's and had some insulin resistance. Again, it is not usual therapy. Insulin is require to treat type 1 diabetes.
