Background Info Hide
I am a 51 y.o. Female with type 2 diabetes. I have started an exercise program 3x a week for 1 hour and also have a personal trainer abour 2x a month. The personal trainer builds a menu that I do not totally agree with. The portion sizes seem large and the not all the food groups are used. I just wonder what is the best menu to use that will keep me losing weight and not losing muscle. I am very concerned with this and want to do what is right for myself.

Hello,

Thanks for bringing your question to dLife.

Not seeing the menu recommended by your trainer, it is difficult to comment on its nutritional adequacy.

Like you, I am also very concern about a menu that avoids entire food groups. This certainly raises a red flag. I also question the nutritional balance of such a plan. What nutrients are missing? What nutrients appear in excess in the menu?

People can lose weight on any plan. Is it safe? Is it healthful? Will it help you to achieve and maintain your blood glucose (sugar) goals? Will it help you with your goals for weight loss and minimizing muscle loss?

I recommend that you talk with a registered dietitian who works with people with diabetes. Registered Dietitians are professionally trained in providing individualized meal plans that are safe and effective. A meal plan must take into consideration your lifestyle, preferences, allergies, diabetes medications (if any), etc.

Take care.
