Hi Kenny74,

Your need for an additional medication to help control your blood sugars may depend upon your overall blood sugar pattern. The typical max dose of metformin is 2,000-2,500 mg. Your doctor may consider another diabetes medication if you are at your max dose and are still seeing elevated morning blood glucose.

However, bear in mind your morning blood sugars may also be elevated because of something you are eating at dinnertime or prior to bedtime.

Aside from food other factors like stress and illness can also trigger your morning highs.
