Glad that you are planning ahead for a successful pregnancy. Moms with diabetes on insulin can safely breast feed their babies. However, other medications may appear in the breast milk.
I recommend that you discuss your plans and concerns with your doctor. He or she can provide you with guidance on the most appropriate medications to take before, during, and after your pregnancy.
You did not mention your level of blood glucose (sugar) control. We encourage our patients to achieve good control before starting their families. Moms who have A1c below 7.0% tend to experience fewer complications throughout their pregnancy.
