How do I find out these questions? My son will soon be a senior in high school and college is just around the cornor, so future plans are being considered. He has a great interest in law enforcement, but nothing is really specified anywhere as to whether a Type I Diabetic can join a police force. Thanks!

Some years ago patients with diabetes were not allowed in jobs such as these. Thanks to th ADA and other organizations like it that advocate for patients with diabetes, you can in fact even work for the FBI if you have diabetes. State laws vary, but you will find that if you can show that your diabetes has been in good control, you can do just about anything you may dream about.

I was diagnosed at age 12 with Type 1 (in 1990). I have been a Police Officer with a suburban Police Department in Upstate New York since 2001. Yes, Type 1's can become Police Officers. My suggestion is to find an Endocrinologist who is willing to stand behind you as you go through the pre-employment medical screening process. My Endo had to write a letter on my behalf stating that I was in good control. If your Endocrinologist is not willing to stand behind you, find a new Endo. That is what I did!! Get on the pump, if you are not already a pump user. I don't know how I could do my job without the pump. Test your BG's often, eat right, exercise regularly and do the very best you can do to take care of yourself. If you take care of yourself, there is almost nothing that you (as a Type 1) cannot do!!
