Background Info Hide
his doctor set up an appointment with the foot doctor buy my husband didn't go. he drained it himself, then proceeded to cut away at the skin. it looks red to me and on the bottom of the foot he now has a pretty dark brown spot on the bottom of this big to. the spot is about the size of a dime but not perfectly round. is this the beginning of an infection? I can't seem to get him to see his doctor. he stopped taking his meds and insulin in January of this year and blood sugars are between 350 and sometime over 500, when he take it which isn't often. he also doesn't eat correctly. is this toe situation the beginng of a serious problem that could lead to amputation?

Dear SupportiveWifeImpossible; If I recall, your husband has ignored his medical condition for quite a while, Janice gave you some insight into what damage he is doing by NOT taking his medications and monitoring.
I might suggest he is overwhelmed by a disease that never takes a 'vacation', is 'in your face' every minute of the day and he may be having complication annoyances at night.
Yes, you are correct in your suspicions, he is flirting with the severe complication that occur from uncontrolled diabetes/amputation. These excessively high (control is <170-80mg/dl at any time) sugars are causing system damage, (ones you can see know) in the feet. Bathroom surgery is very risky business, and he/'responsible person' needs to take control. Nasty complications are in the works: uncontrolled diabetes is the leading cause for
  • amputations, (this spot you mention is VERY dangerous, infection, with the high sugars healing can NOT occur),
  • blindness,
  • kidney failure
  • many other very bad-painful conditions, (diabetes impacts the WHOLE body).
He needs help NOW with the sugar levels.
  • Why is he in denial of self-care of this chronic disease?
  • One of our experts, Janice, gave you recommendations, and I must agree with her assessment, "HE NEEDS TO GET BACK ON HIS MEDICATIONS" ASAP.
  • How can we/You
  • help to get to the bottom of WHY he chooses NOT to properly care for himself.
  • He knows the consequences of his actions (?)
  • Could you accompany him to his appointments, perhaps the high blood sugars have causes some errors in the processing of information.ie. TIA, dementia or some other aberration in thinking processes. I have included a web site as to help get the process going-talking and taking action!
You know him best, sounds like a family conference time, "why hubby/dad needs to take care of himself."Click here to read it. Good Luck! Sue
