Dear Just diagnosed-

No, you do not need to use your legs as your only site of injection, especially if it is very painful. There are many areas in which injections can be given. Let's start at the abdomen. There is a lot of real estate there, just make sure you stay at least 2 inches away from the belly button.

Next there is the back of both arms.

Review your technique:

  • If you are using alcohol, are you letting it dry?
  • Are you using the needle only once? It dulls after first usage.
  • Can you use a smaller diameter but longer needle? The larger the number like a 31g is smaller and less painful.
  • Avoid rubbing the area after injection.

If you still experiencing pain, call your md office and see if the office nurse or Diabetes Educator can meet with you to review your technique.

Your injections should not be a source of great pain. Do well.

I've found alcohol swabs with pain relief incorporated in them. Also i clean the area before filling the syringe. This usually gives plenty of time for it to dry. When I first started with the insulin I didn't let it dry a couple of times and it hurt like blazes with the alcohol on the needle. I hope this helps.

You also may want to try injecting at a 45 degree angle instead of 90 degrees. I find this to be a lot less painful. Barbara
