"What else is there besides an ACE inhibitor to help preserve kidney function if you happen to be allergic?"

I've had type 1 diabetes with normal blood pressure for 7 years. I was started on a very low dose ACE inhibitor about 8 months ago due to some microalbuminuria. I didn't notice at first but I developed this really annoying cough that I think is caused by the ACE inhibitor... (in fact I stopped taking it and the cough went away). Is there another drug or class of drugs out there that are as effective in preventing kidney problems as the ACE inhibitor is?

Dear keie0008, Drugs called "arbs" are often used when the ACE inhibitors cause extreme coughing. Some doctors will also try a class of drugs called beta blockers. Ask your doctor to recommend a different drug for you to use from one of these classes.

ACE inhibitors commonly cause an annoying cough. It is not physically hurtful, but is quite annoying. If it is intolerable, the providers will generally prescribe an ARB- angiotensin receptor blocker, which is the next choice for one with diabetes. The intention is not only to control the BP but to protect the kidneys. I would highly encourage you to speak to your Dr and ask about this specifically. The most common drawback is the cost, as this class of drugs does not come in generic at this time.

I was originally put on an ACE inhibitor but developed that common cough. The cough is not an allergy but a side effect. I was switched to Diovan and then recently to Cozaar which both are in a different class than ACE, but does the same thing. I've been taking these for about 6 years and have had no signs of kidney damage.
Good luck.
