Hi and thanks for writing dLife. Your concern is very appropriate, as we know there are several things you can do to help maintain your kidney function. First, be sure that you are doing everything possible to maintain good blood sugar control. Check with your physician, registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator on glucose monitoring advice, diet/nutrition planning and medication management. Secondly, be also to find out specific dietary needs for your level of kidney disease; this often requires consideration of sodium, protein, and sometimes potassium, phosphorus and fluid intake. Again, the assistance of a registered dietitian is very important as putting together all of these diet needs can be overwhelming to most people. Ask your doctor about exercise, which can help blood sugar and weight management- but it is important to consult with your doctor first because of risk factors involved with both diabetes and kidney disease may limit the types of exercise that you might be able to do. When picking up prescription medication or buying over the counter medications or supplements, always speak with the pharmacist about your kidney status as dosages of many medications may need to be altered because of declining kidney function. Good luck to you!
