Background Info Hide
I am fortunate enough to work for a company that is very compassionate when it comes to being ill. Last year I missed 1/3 of my work days due to illnesses related to my diabetes. It will be even more days by the time this year is over. I am also very frequently late because my readings are too high or too low and I visit the Dr. almost weekly. Do you think this is cause enough to file for disability? I am aware that it takes a long time, but I do feel that I am not able to perform to standard at any job because my diabetes takes an incredible amount of time. Also, my blood sugars are totally out of control. Never under 300. Too Much Stress!!

Hi 5Scott-
Disability is federal insurance managed on the State level for people with catastrophic illnesses and low resources. At this time your employer is standing by you. That is commendable, but may not last for much longer in this economy. Being prepared is always best. I recommend that you get legal advice to start the information gathering needed to apply for Social Security Disability J00 SSI. It is difficult to get approval for this insurance without a lawyer to help. All counties offer free legal council for people with low income. Take avantage of the County Legal Aid office closest to you. They will steer you in the right direction. It is best to have very complete medical history and the backing of your doctors before applying. That brings me to my next point::

When Diabetes is as unstable as yours, you must try to investigate why. Are you seeing an endocrinologist or diabetic specialist? Have you learned to count carbs? Are you using an insulin pump? Are you using correction doses of rapid insulin correctly? What is your insulin regimen?

Many questions arise! I hope that you will look through dLife and read more about the current treatments, the use of pumps and how to count carbs. Take some time to look through the site.

Self-management also includes diet, exercise and preventative evaluations! Do not forget to see a podiatrist, an ophthalmologist and a dentist at least annually!. And get your flu vaccine!

Good luck scott to be approved for disability the law states you can not perform work for 8 hrs per day 5x a week. If you are currently working that will be against you. I know it isnt fair but there rules dont make sense. Get a lawyer you wont win it any other way unless your in such bad shape you can eat or do anything on your own and even some of them get turned down the first time.
