I am terrified that this is a death warrant. What can I do to stop this in its tracks. Do I need to get a nephrologist involved?

Dear sdr8758, I am glad that you have realized that ignoring your diabetes is not helping you lead a long and productive life. It is time to face this disease and do what is best for you. Just because you had some protein in your urine does not mean that only an endocrinologist can treat you. Many primary practitioners can manage your condition. You may want a referral to a urologist to rule out kidney disease. High blood pressure is usually one of the major factors that cause diabetes kidney damage with leakage of protein in the urine. The more protein, the greater the damage. You need to be sure you are on the appropriate blood pressure medications and that you are keeping your blood sugars under control. Start with your primary doctor and see if he/she thinks you need a referral to a specialist.
