Hello,

Thanks for bringing your question to dLife.

The purpose of thyroid replacement therapy is to replace the thyroid hormone that is lacking. Weight loss could be a side-effect of the therapy. This medication is NOT prescribed for weight control.

The general recommendations for taking thyroid medicine:

It works best on an empty stomach and when taken 1 hour before any other medications. Do NOT take thyroid hormone with calcium, iron, multivitamins, alumin hydroxide antacids, colestipol, or other medicines that bind bile acids, or fiber supplements.

Each person responds to thyroid medicine slightly differently. Your doctor who prescribed the medication can provide details of your thyroid hormone status.

Healthful eating and regular exercise are still the most effective and safest method for weight control. No meal and exercise plan? Talk with a registered dietitian about establishing a personal meal and exercise plan that includes your favorite foods. You will learn how to make better food choices, read food labels, and modify favorite family recipes. You will also learn to control your blood glucose!

Take care.

Hi, I'm a Type 2 diabetic who's been taking the thyroid medicine for about 10-15 years. It wasn't until I started going to an Endo for diabetes about 2 years ago that I found out I was not taking the medicine correctly. If I remember correctly I was taking a bunch of medicine before I went to bed. He said - no no, you must take that in the morning before all your other medicines! Now, I get up at 5 or 6 to to take the Levoxithyrine and then wait at hour to take the other pills including vitamins, etc , Prilosec and then I have to wait another hour to take a dose of Carafate for Gastritis. By then I've had to wait 3 1/2 hours before I can eat anything and boy am I hungry by then! The thyroid medicine does seem to work a lot better when I take it as noted. Nobody ever explained how to take it before! I have other issues pertaining to weight loss but I think it does help keep the weight off and the metabolism where it should be. Good Luck, Marie
