"What is happening to my son's brain function?"
Asked By: pmegan78
Category: Type 1

Background Info Hide
My eight year old was dxed with type 1 diabetes in April 09. He was also dxed with hypothyroidism in July 09 & they stated that his TSH was a 7.85 & started him on meds for it. I am also a type 1 of 27 years & my daughter is also a type 1 since Nov 08. We do just fine, but my son is not. Since April he has slowly been changing into this 'different' child. He doesn't remember anything. (not an exaggeration)!! His concentration is affected as well. His diabetes is under perfect control, his A1C was a 6.9 in August, so its not that. We can have a conversation with him and 2 seconds later he doesn't even remember any of it. He started school two weeks ago & yesterday his teacher from last year asked what happened to him because he is a total different child than last year. He has also started talking without moving his lips & clutching his teeth together in the last few weeks. I am terrified that something is really wrong with his brain function and I feel I am running out of time. PLEASE

The problem seems to be more complex than I can answer here, but I will try to give you some direction. Brain function is affected by too many low blood sugars, so I would ask if he has a lot of hypoglycemia, perhaps at night. If that is not an issue, I would consult with a pediatric neurologist to investigate why these new symptoms are occuring. Early intervention is best, and answers will be found. I understand your frustration, and wish you all the best. Please let me know how you progress. susan

pmegan, You asked this question about 3 weeks ago in the Dlife Parents Forum..I responded ,along with others, that this sounded very serious and to please get him checked out at a local hospital or by a specialist... If you live in a small town or city without many available medical facilities or treatment/disgnosis professionals , you may want to consider even traveling to another city to get help. You can begin by calling your insurance company to find a reputable resource. Can you do this? Please do NOT delay: Is your son getting worse? Neurological impairments are not to be ignored. The fact that his former teacher has noticed a big change in his behaviour and general presentation is a definite RED FLAG..Please do not delay in getting help for your child.. As I told you before, I work with children in the public schools who have medical challenges, and if I saw a child like this, I would consider it a MEDICAL CRISIS,. I would then have to contact the parents, and if I no follow-through was seen , we at school would be obligated to contact the child-protection authorities and local health care agencies. Pmegan this is really serious. Do not delay!! I am praying for you and your family. God Bless, Brunetta
