"I have charcot foot in one foot & have charcot boot. Can I swim? What kind of exercise can I do? I have custom shoes & elyptical machine. "

Background Info Hide
Been getting charcot under control for 1 1/2 years. Got custom shoes made, twisted ankle, broke foot again. I have a charcot boot I wear all the time now. I wondered since the elyptical is low impact and I was doing it before I broke the foot. I am a young 49 and need to exercise, looking for something I can do, I'm not dead yet.

Hello sew25-
Charcot foot is a very serious complication seen in some diabetics. Complete immobilition for a very long time is usually the treatment. Absolutely no weight bearing is permitted on the afflicted limb. If you are now in a boot, you must be healing. Still what are your limitations? Your orthopedic specialist or podiatrist should instruct you as to exactly what you can and can not do. It sounds reasonable that swimming is the exercise of choice. But please note
You cannot be putting your weight down on your foot to get from the pool to the place where your boot is! You cannot jump into the pool thinking it is deeper than it is and hitting the bottom with your foot! You are trying to heal from one of the most serious orthopedic complications that can happen to a diabetic. If further injury occurs to the foot, it could lead to amputation. Please discuss any exercise, swimming or anything else in detail with your doctor before attempting.
