"If eating processed meats (bacon, hot dogs, ground meats,) are some better for us than others? Some more heart healthy? More diabetic friendly?"

Background Info Hide
We try to avoid processed meats because of bad heart histories. But when we do eat bacon, is turkey bacon better to eat than pork bacon? Beef hot dogs better than pork? Ground turkey better than ground beef?

Thanks for writing dLife. Your question is excellent! Processed meats are a concern with general good nutrition and diabetes because of 2 main reasons: sodium content and total/saturated fat. All processed meats are significant sources of sodium and for this reason alone should be minimized, since blood pressure control is an essential part of diabetes management. Saturated and total fat varies among types of meats, so it is better to choose the leanest types that you can- for example lean ham and Canadian bacon would be better than regular bacon or sausage. Hot dogs, no matter what they are made of are high fat unless they are specifically labeled as being lower in fat. So, all in all, use these foods only occasionally and in small portions. Read the labels and balance your diet out with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean fresh versions of meats, chicken and fish.
