There has been a lot of discussion in the literature about gastric bypass surgery reversing diabetes in people. Since you did not have it before surgery, that really isn't the issue. The issue is your risk factors for diabetes: family history, increasing age, history of gestational diabetes, race, sedentary lifestyle, overweight. You do not mention any of these - but any one could be the reason diabetes is now diagnosed. Unfortunately some who have the surgery regain their weight which then makes them at risk for the diabetes. The bottom line is no matter what the cause (some times it happens no matter what we do) - good blood sugar control prevents complications. Do not ignore this window of opportunity to get good education, develop a personalized meal plan with a dietician, get daily activity and take any prescribed medication to keep your blood sugar in target range (fasting less than 100-110, 2 hours after meals less than 140).
