"My son-in-law raised a good question today. If a PWD has a low that causes coma, how long before glucose must be administered?"

Type 2 since 08/2005. on metformin and glipizide and novalin n added June this year.

That is a good question - loss of consciousness with low blood sugar is a medical emergency! 911 should be called. Without adequate glucose the brain cannot function. Seizures and death are a result if not treated. This can take a matter of minutes. If this is something you have experienced, talk to your doctor about having glucagon in your home - this is injected and causes the liver to release sugar into your system. Your glipizide and insulin put you at risk for having low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). You need to have a glucose source with you at all times - glucose tablets or gel are my recommendations. Alwyas test if possible if you are feeling low - while able ingest 15 gms of carbohydrate, recheck in 15 minutes, repeat as needed.
