"Does Celiac disease ever occur amongst Hispanic people?"
Asked By: sheryns

Background Info Hide
My husband is Hispanic and has type 2 diabetes. Our daughter who has autism and Down's syndrome was diagnosed with Celiac a year ago. We were told that Celiac is historically a disease of people of Northern-European decent. I have been tested but the test was negative. My husband isn't willing to be tested, and says because he is Hispanic that he couldn't have Celiac disease. My husband has ignored his diabetes for 7 years, and is now finally seeing a doc regularly & on oral meds. But his health is far from good at this point. He has gone from being over weight a few years ago to being underweight now and doesn't look or act well. He also has frequent gastro issues and lactose intolerance. I'm wondering if he may also have Celiac disease.

Hello,

Thanks for bringing your question to dLife.

It is true that celiac disease is more typical among people of Northern European ancestry. It is an inherited disease. This disease is diagnosed less frequently among people of Hispanic ancestry.

Contrary to the norm, I have worked with several patients of Hispanic heritage with both diabetes and celiac disease. Both diseases are treatable.

There are multiple gastrointestinal issues that have similar symptoms as celiac disease. Clinical confirmation (laboratory testing and followed by a biopsy only if the test results are positive) would be required for a correct diagnosis. Establishing a correct diagnosis is crucial for obtaining the correct treatment. Untreated celiac disease is very serious.

When he becomes less overwhelmed, perhaps he will reconsider.

Take care.
