Dear Donna-

Thank-you for writing to dlife . This is an important issue for many people with diabetes or pre-diabetes. It is called peripheral neuropathy. This is a condition that is a co-morbidity or side effect of elevated glucose levels. Higher glucose levels contribute to the damage of very tiny blood vessels that stimulate the nerves in our extremities.

Foot care is one of the most important self cares of diabetes. Take a look at the following suggestions regarding care:

  • inspect your feet every day for areas of redness, sores or irritation. SInce your feet are numb you won't feel an injury
  • wear box toed shoes that never constrict your toes
  • when showering consider shower shoes
  • dry between each toe and avoid lotion between toes that will trap moisture
  • only file toenails never cut
  • consider socks that wick away moisture like a sport sock
  • keep a log of the feeling in your feet and notify your MD of changes
  • avoid pedicure salons and go to a pediatrist for any nail issues
  • do not pop, cut, lance any boils or irritations on the feet

There will be additional information on the dLife website in 7-self care behaviors and diabetes information. Take a look at the information I have given you and well as what you have read and discuss it with your doctor. He may do a non-invasive test to identify your sensitivity of your feet as a baseline to watch your progress. Stay well, stay active, and stay informed.
