"Should I have hypoglycemic symptoms, when I have diabetes 2?? My readings are high over150 but I feel crappy enough to eat some carbs to feel better."
Asked By: lilygal

Background Info Hide
I've been on Metformin, was ok for 6 months, then got sick when dose was doubled. Then on Glipizide, I got a rash. Then on Januvia, still getting low sugar symptoms. Now, I'm on Janumet. My symptoms are still there, sweating, dizzy, hot, irritable, headache, shaky, etc. I've had these symptoms all year so far. My endocronologist says my body was happy when I had really high sugars and it just takes awhile for my body to get used to the lower sugars. It still wants the sugar, so it makes me ill. Does this happen to others?? What made them healthy again? I feel alone in this and REALLY tired of these symptoms!! Thanks, Lilygal I was diagnosed one year ago.

Hello LilyGal: Sorry to hear of your roller-coaster of a ride with diabetes. Please don't feel alone with this, this site as well as many others are there to HELP. If the insurance permits, seek out your local certified diabetes educators, usually at the larger hospitals. They offer education as well as support and you are not alone, they need YOU as much you need them. They offer support groups completely free and a great sounding board as well as some practical tips of living well with diabetes.

Absolutely, as a Ty2 you are very susceptible to a 'hypo' reaction. Your pancreas maybe still producing some insulin, those beta cells acting sporadic, (typical Ty2), plus the medication is making the insulin work more efficient, you add some other life events, (or maybe not) and viola-hypoglycemia!!

Your endo is correct, the body gets used to the sweetness and you need to 'gradually' wean it as to have it identify normal as <140mg/dl at any time. Things happen: Blood glucose levels do react to several variables:

  • stress, (good or bad),
  • inconsistency in fuel intake, or a hypoglycemic symptom, (carbohydrates contribute 100% to the blood glucose, protein supplies about 60% and fat about 10-20%), a sudden longer bout of exercise, a missed meal or …..

Consequent, I would suggest try to rule out things you can't control, (pancreas functions, medications variables) and look to establish some consistency in meals and snacks and blood glucose monitoring:

  • you can journal dietary intake and obtain a nutrient analysis via www.fitday.com,
  • keep a log book on blood sugar levels, monitor daily however, vary the times, i.e. 1-2 hours after a meal, before dinner or before bed, (good info to share with your endocrinologist.

Janumet ® a mix of Januvia + Metformin, is tailored to the reduction of liver glucose production, stimulates glucose uptake in insulin sensitivity of muscle and fat cells.

Hope this helps, call on us as needed. Regards Sue
