Dear rosehelen, Thank you for your question about using two different insulins. Your mother's insulin regimen is correct. Lantis is a basal or baseline insulin. It can be taken once per day by most users. Some people do better if they take the insulin in the morning. The Humalog insulin acts very quickly. It is paired with meals. The amount of humalog is related to the amount of carbohdyrate grams eaten at the meal. Has you mother talked to her doctor about the night sweats? That is probably the first step she should take.

Your mother needs to check her blood sugar when she wakes up sweaty in the night. If it is 80 or below I would recommend 15 grams of carbohydrate with a little protein. Recheck in 15 minutes to make sure it is going up before she goes back to sleep. One cup of milk is a good choice. Keep good blood sugar records and talk to her doctor.

Taking both insulins so close together is not something I would do as a diabetic. She should be taking the humalog at meal time. Sounds like the timing of her insulin is off and also she needs to test to see what her bs is at the time she feels the sweats I would think its below 70.
