"Is this onset of Juvenile? My 15 yr old has been feeling bad and had bs of 50 1.5 hr after meal. Now showing both high and lows on bs readings."
Asked By: susan_gabe

Background Info Hide
He has been very fatigued and "overall sick" for last 2 months. Battery of test and ultrasound. Only "off" reading is BS. Now monitoring with results from 50 to 178. High readings are before meals (4 hours since last meal) We were told this is onset of T1. I cannot find anything about the hypo readings with T1 at onset.

I would ask a few questions including if your child has had sudden weight loss recently or has been drinking and urinating frequently. You may also consider auto-antibody testing, which may help indicate a diagnosis of diabetes. Hypoglycemia may occur because the pancreas is not working properly and what insulin gets produced is most often too little, but at times too much for the carbohydrate on board. Work with your endocrinologist to find the best course of treatment for your child.

Sounds like diabetes with the readings you stated. He could be in what they call the honeymoon phase. Keep a close eye on his fastings and post readings but like the expert stated lows and highs do happen to a diabetic with the pancreas making its own process. Many times I have read hypo are considered a precusor to diabetes.
