"To get adequate pain coverage for severe neuropathy. Maxed on Gabapentin, unable to tolerate Lyrica. Now what?"
Asked By: dmcgrath
Category: Neuropathy

Background Info Hide
I am a Type 1 diag 11/07. Lumbar fusion 6/96. Severe neuropathy since back surgery. Neurology attributes this to diabetes & surgery. Take 1200mg Gabapentin TID, Use an Insulin Pump. Became ataxic on Lyrica. I have tried many meds and have become hopeless in obtaining pain relief. Am trying ambien for sleep but this isn't helpful. What do I do? I am reluctant to even ask one of my MD's for pain meds because I don't want to be a drug seeker, but, don't I have a right to be comfortable too? I am a nurse and strive to keep my pt's comfortable so why not me too?

As a nurse I appreciate your concern over being thought of as a "drug seeker" but you do have a right to be comfortable. Chronic pain is also a stressor that can affect your blood sugar control and your mental health. I would recommend you ask for a referral to a pain clinic - let the pain experts assess and make recommendations. Alternative medicine like acupuncture may also be a consideration. Don't just suffer - continue your efforts to find relief, even if it means finding another MD to help.
