"I test my son at 7am. He is at 170-200. He continues sleeping until 10am-12pm (summer) but then his blood is 210-250 when he wakes. What causes this?"

My son is usually active but as a recently diagnosed Type 1 diabetic and teenager (He just turned 13), he enjoys staying up late and sleeping in during summer and on weekends. He was just diagnosed March 2009. Just trying to figure out why he would be higher at 10am to noon after being tested at 7am (when I leave for work). I ususally test him while he is sleeping and he has been in bed the entire time from 7am to about 12pm and hasn't eaten. Could this be something hormonal? Is it because he is newly diagnosed and a teenager?

Many factors affect blood sugar, and you are correct to think of hormones which can definitely cause a rise in blood glucose. He also may not have enough basal insulin on board to keep his blood sugar under control. Check with your health care team for adjustment suggestions.
