Dear hesbyherb, The dosage of the ACE inhibitor medication is based upon the strength of the drug needed to control your blood pressure. That is very important to prevent kidney damage. If you need more medication, you may be at risk for more damage. So, it really doesn't protect you more, it just helps you reduce the damage caused by high blood pressure. So, a person on 10 mg versus a person on 20 mg of the same drug, may have the same level of protectiveness. The key is to get the blood pressure under control. A small dose is ordered for most diabetic patients even if they don't have high blood pressure in order to provide some help in protecting the kidneys.
