"Was I suffering from prediabetes in 1999? If yes. What role did prediabetes play on the type 2 almost four years later?"
Asked By: flexmo
Category: Prediabetes

Background Info Hide
In 1998 my physician told me to “keep an eye on my sugars” when he noticed my fasting blood glucose level at 94 milligrams per deciliter. A year later, 1999, my fasting blood glucose level was at 101 mg/dl indicating impaired fasting glucose. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) “a fasting plasma glucose value between 100 to 125 mg/dl or more is indicative of prediabetes condition.” Therefore, in 1999, I had prediabetes and “should have received regular retesting every one to two years to monitor for type 2 diabetes.” By Spring of 2003 FBS test results displayed 113 mg/dl, and by December of 2003 it had reached 210 mg/dl.

Yes, in 1999 you did have prediabetes, according to today's diagnostic level. However, the term prediabetes did not exist until around 2002 when the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) study results were released. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease that generally begins with some genetic predisposition, advancing age, being overweight and increasing blood sugar. We did not know before 2002 that we could prevent the progression of diabetes and clinicians treated elevated blood sugar as "borderline" and often gave patients instructions to "watch" their sugar but did not typically encourage lifestyle changes. We now know that we can slow down or prevent the progression of prediabetes to diabetes and hopefully most clinicians address these issues proactively.
