"Does my son have type 1 or not? Should I still worry after some normal tests and some abnormal tests."
Asked By: m2adison

Background Info Hide
In June at a routine dr visit my 6 yr old son had blood sugar levels of 309, and ketones in his urine. We have done 2 anti-body tests and an 8 hour blood glucose monitoring appointment that came back normal. He still has blood sugar levels that go from 160 to 300 one hour after meals. His a1c level was 5.75, Type 1 diabetes also runs high in his fathers family.

With blood sugar levels as high as 300, I would say that diabetes is probably imminent. Now your childs' body may be able to produce insulin to have "normal" reading sometimes, but probably will give out in time. After meal blood sugars start to rise first when a person is developing diabetes. Antibodies are not seen in all patients for some reason. I would suggest going to an endocrinologist for a definitive diagnosis.
