"Why have I lost weight? Will it stop?"
Asked By: glitterik
Category: Type 2

Background Info Hide
I have lost nearly 15 pounds in under 8 months. I have never been fat. In fact, all my adult life, I have deliberately overeaten, especially carbs, in order to keep my weight UP. I began walking 3 miles daily and eating a vegetable- and fruit-loaded diet in January '09, as well as beginning Metformin and small amounts of insulin. I am 5'9" tall and the weight loss has leveled off, but I am now a size 6-8. It's getting expensive to keep replacing clothing that is too big! Why did I lose weight and return to my "old" weight? I want to stop at 140. I am now at 148. Will I continue to lose?

Hi glitterik, If you are not carefully monitoring your portions and your dose of medications is not high enough your blood sugar will remain high. Some symptoms of high blood sugar are excessive thirst and urination.

American Diabetes Association recommends fasting blood sugar to be less than 130 mg/dl, and 2 hours post meal a blood sugar under 180 mg/dl is ideal.

A simple way to balance your meals is the plate method-- 1/4 of your plate should be starchy foods, 1/4 protein ( lean meat, chicken, fish, etc., and 1/2 non starchy vegetables). Be cautious not to drink too many sweet bevereages these can spike your blood sugar as well. For more nutrition information go to the healthy eating tab on the dLife website.

The expert's answer above doesn't really address the question. My question is, WHY have I lost weight? Is it diet, is it Metformin, insulin? exercise? I just want to know why I have lost weight with my diabetes apparently under control when so many diabetics are obese. My A1C has dropped to 5. My fasting glucose readings are on target. I do eat right, I believe. I eat no processed food with more than 5 ingredients in it. I do cheat a bit, but basically eat vegetables, fruit, protein, and carbs, in that order. I eat no sugar, and avoid carbs. Is losing weight as a diabetic normal? I am delighted to be thin again, but why have I lost weight?
