Thanks for writing. It is normal for people who are newly diagnosed with diabetes to feel anxious. It also common for people who have had diabetes for a long time to feel anxiety. Common causes of anxiety are fear of the unknown, fear of complications, fear about financial costs associated with diabetes, and fear of having low blood sugar reactions. There are also many other causes. I have several suggestions for you.

  • Ask to be referred to a Certified Diabetes Educator who is familiar with and can help you deal with anxiety that is specifically related to diabates.
  • Join a local diabetes support group. One of the most powerful tools to help adjust to your diagnosis is being around other people who are going through the same experience
  • Check your blood sugar when you are feeling anxious because sudden anxiety may be a sign of low blood sugar. If this the case, notify your physician and learn how to prevent and treat low blood sugar.
  • Lastly, Let whoever prescribed your antidepressant know about your continued anxiety. You may benefit from a change in dose or an another medication.

The more you learn about diabetes the better you will feel about your sense of control over it. It is important to learn how to get control of your diabetes verses letting your diagnosis take control of you.

    Good luck.
