Dear monalisa2u

You are experiencing a condition known as hypoglycemia unawareness. This can be a very frightening condition as well as dangerous. It may be that you experienced frequent low blood glucose levels and in some cases if you tolerate slightly higher blood glucose levels for a period of time you may have symptoms again. This complication usually doesn’t develop unless individuals have had diabetes for a long period of time, but I notice you were recently diagnosed. You may need to be a bit more attentive to small warning signs that your blood glucose is dropping. Another option would be the use of a continuous glucose monitor which will show you the trend in your blood glucose and warn you as the levels begin to fall. You may want to work with your diabetes educator to determine why you are no longer experiencing symptoms Frequent blood glucose monitoring will be necessary in order for you to track your levels. I also encourage you to wear a diabetes identification necklace, they are available for free from the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation at 800-941-4635. And always test your blood glucose before driving or participating in any activity that may place you at risk.
