Dear gre2ag, Thanks for writing into the dLife Expert Column. The current way that diabetes is diagnosed is by either doing a 2 hour glucose tolerance test or looking at glucose readings after a 10-12 hour fasting period. Your doctor looked at fasting readings. If the readings are 126 or above, twice, then you are diagnosed with diabetes. There has been some recent discussion regarding using A1C lab values to diagnose diabetes, but that is still being looked at. Probably the A1c level of 6.5 will diagnose diabetes. So, you are early on in your diagnosis. Losing weight and exercising can help you stay off diabetes medications and live a fairly normal life. I commend your efforts to make these changes.

Yes as the expert said if you have fastings over 126 twice that puts you into the diabetic range. If you are having fastings in the 150 area that makes it diabetic just like your doctor stated.
