"does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get into a routine of checking blood sugars?"
Asked By: ashley826

Background Info Hide
I was diagnosed at the age of 14 and am now approaching my 23rd birthday. I have a very hard time not only accepting myself, but the fact that i have diabetes. This has led me to not check my blood sugars like i should and not take care of myself as i should. I was curious as to if anyone had ideas of ways to encourage me to check.

Hey Ashley, I'm not a doctor, but I'm an editor here at dLife and also a type 1 diabetic (for almost 23 years). I've gone through different cycles of not wanting to test and/or having trouble staying inspired to keep track of my numbers. It's a tricky battle, for sure!

I've found that setting certain goals for myself helps a lot. Back when I was in a "college slump," I told myself that I'd test every morning first thing, every night before bed, and definitely before lunch. That way, I'd at least have three checks throughout the day. It took a few weeks to make that my routine, and then it became easier and easier to check more often. Baby steps, you know? :)

Thanks for your question, and I hope this helps a little. Let us know how you do!

Best,
Kerri.
