"I have never been tested for diabetes until I was pregnant. I had Gestational diab. How do I know it is gone?"
Asked By: hadst20

Background Info Hide
I am 27 year old white female. I had my first baby in June 2009. I have a family history of type 2 outside of immediate family but my father's numbers continue to be borderline type 2 with his numbers for years. I have never been tested for diabetes until my pregnacy and had no testsw after I delivered. My blood sugar was only checked once. How often should I have my numbers checked to make sure I take care of myself if I do become diabetic.

Hello,

Congratulations on being a new Mom!

Typically, new Moms have a blood glucose (sugar) test around 6 weeks after the baby is born to see whether they still have diabetes. For most women, gestational diabetes goes away after pregnancy.

Having gestational diabetes increases the risk of gestational diabetes during future pregnancies or getting type 2 diabetes later. Talk with a registered dietitian about a personalized meal and exercise plan to prevent or delay getting type 2 diabetes.
