Hello Lisa81; Dealing with the diagnosis of diabetes for 18 years and you have recently developed complications in your eyes. I do hope you have support resource people to help.

Yes, I have some resources to suggest that maybe of help, (no guarantees but sources to pursue).

First priority, get back to the basics :

  • Treatment always involves meal planning and physical activity (referred to as lifestyle therapies) and may include oral medications and/or insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disorder characterized by a triad of metabolic abnormalities causing the blood glucose to rise, resulting in damage to the blood vessels and nerves, as evidenced by the eye involvement. To prevent any additional problems, get back to the basics:
  • Eat a wide variety of foods. Special diet foods are not necessary; however, some reduced calorie items can be useful.
  • Eat on a regular basis (every 4-5 hours).
  • Eat consistent amounts of carbohydrates (from fruit, milk, bread/starch, and sweets) at meals. Goal range 44-60 gm. carb per meal snacks between meals approx 15-20gms. Include proteins with main meals to approx 5-7 oz. per day, added fat in moderations.

Goal ranges for blood glucose: before meals 90-130, and post meals, try NOT to exceed 140-170mg/dl or per your personal care physicians goal ranges. A small frequent meal approach might help.

  • Eat more high fiber foods (dried beans, fruits, vegetables and whole grains).
  • Use less added fat, salt and sugar.
  • Decrease portion sizes, if weight is a concern.

    ABCs of Diabetes: A1C<7%, BP<130/80,HDL>50, LDL<100, Tgs<150,

  • if you smoke-please stop
  • activity to approx.>150 min/per wk per tolerance.
