My husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after being injured when a brigde collapsed in my city. These are the injuries that he susutained. Fracture of L1 with fusion D11-D12,L2-L3. A bleeding ulcer which the doctors told me was caused from the stress of the accident. His prescription for his eyeglasses has doubled and has some sequelles to his eyes which was also caused by stress of the accident . He also had bladder truama which makes difficultfor him to hold his urine and he frquently has to use the bathroom. He hit his head but had no head truama, but lately has been suffering from dizzy spells and is taking novo-betahistine, while waiting to take test to find cause of his dizziness. The is no history of diabetes in his family. It has been almost 3 yrs since the acc. and his diabetes now at 7.2 it has gradually declined as to the first time where it was at 24. Funny cause his diet has changed and he is alot less active then he was. Did the stressof accident cause diabetes?

We apologize for the delay in answering your question. It is difficult to give a definite answer. I am so sorry for the unfortunate circumstances of the accident to your husband. He has been through a lot - and you, too! If he had prediabetes prior to the accident, the emotional and physical stress can certainly affect blood sugar levels. There does not have to be a family history for diabetes to occur. The A1C goal for good control is 7 per ADA standards and 6.5 per AACE (endocrine) standards. He needs to work at a little more activity, follow his meal plan, and possibly have his medications adjusted to improve his blood sugar control and prevent complications. He certainly doesn't need more health issue to be concerned with!
Thanks for your question and stay proactive in helping your husband take control of his diabetes.
