"Metformin instructions say "take with food." Literally? Or take 15-30 minutes before meal?"

Unfortunately, I don't think I have the extended release version. I also seem to have stomach upset no matter whether or not I have food with it. I might have to ask my doc about trying the extended release. Thanks!

I take metformin ER ( extended release ) AFTER I have finished the evening meal. Having food in your gut is going to slow the passage of the metformin thru your system allowing the release over time. If you take it before eating it may be passing thru at a speedier rate and you may not be getting the full benefit of the time release medication. Also, some meds may upset your stomach when taken and that is why having food is beneficial.
I do not know if that specifically relates to metformin or not.
