"Newly diagnosed and MD put me on Metformin 850 mg, BID, isn't that a high starting dose?"
Asked By: askdmom

Background Info Hide
I am female and weight @ 195 pounds. A1C was 10 and fasting BG was 220. He did not want me to monitor at home. He just told me to go on a "strict diet", and come back in 6 weeks. Should I get a second opinion from an Endocrinologist about the medication?

A high dose would have been 2,500 mg of metformin. Your bs are pretty high would you rather prevent damage or get your bs down. I suggest a fresh approach to eating fresh foods and veggies and lean meats. Read all labels for carb content this is what raises bs. I am amazed he doesnt want you to test, that in itself is pretty alarming to me. Let me say that testing is your very best tool along with exercise. Exercise helps burn sugar and also helps you to lose weight, weight prevents the insulin your body produces to work properly. Getting the bs down is of prime importance I hope that dose of metformin does it for you.

My doc started me at 500mg 2x daily for 3 months then increased the dosage to 1000mg 2x day. My original A1c was 8-something 3 months ago in the hospital. My fasting blood sugars are usually in the mid 120s the past 3 months. My recent A1c was 7. Perhaps your doc started you at 850 mg 2x day because your A1c was so high and your BS was so high. It seems strange not to monitor to know how you're doing...

I am a Nurse, so I have a meter from a class I took, and YES I have been monitoring at home! Just watching my carbs and starting to exercise, I have seen my numbers start to come down. The info on Metformin says to titrate up to that dose, so I have not started it yet, until I see the Endocrinologist this week. It's great to have a place to vent and ask for advice, I'm still in shock over this whole thing!

Please tell me I misunderstood the part about not testing at home. I hope you are keeping a record of your fasting, before and after meals glucose levels. I feel it is imperative to know what your body is doing and how every food affects your glucose level. For example, I can not seem to have white bread in any amount with out a large spike in my glucose level. I would be running to a 2nd opinion if I was told not to test at home. If I have misunderstood and your question is more about the amount of medication you are taking then I would have you refer to your home monitor results. Are your glucose readings in range? Good luck and I hope you get a second opinion and test, test, test!!!
