Thanks for bringing your question to dLife.
Red Yeast Rice (RYR) has been sold as a natural cholesterol-lowering agent in over the counter supplements.
In animal study, oral consumption of RYR has been shown to decrease plasma glucose and increase plasma insulin. However, another animal study indicates a possible increase in glucose levels.
Early human evidence suggests the potential for benefits in diabetics. Possible decrease in glucose levels was noted in clinical trials. Until well-designed clinical trials have been conducted, strong recommendations cannot be made in this field.
Caution should be used in individuals with diabetes. Frequent blood glucose readings are recommended to determine individual responses to the supplement.
Talk with your doctor about your concerns. He or she may need to review your treatment plan and make modifcations as needed.
Take care.
