Good morning; Brown spots on the legs and feet. Diabetes interferes with the physiology of all the body's vasculature which has the potential to lead to skin changes, which maybe what is happening here. (I would refer you to a Dermatologist/Endocrinologist for a definitive diagnosis). All I can do is make an educated guess. However, there is a diabetic demopathy, referenced as 'shin spots' or pigmented spots on the lower legs, a common skin problem in individuals with diabetes. It can be present in as many as 70% of folks with the diagnosis. These pigmented spots, usually seen on the lower legs, can occur on the forearms, thighs and other areas. There is some speculation that the occurrence is linked to blood sugar controls. 'Speculations' at this time and to date there is no effective treatment for these lesions. New lesions appear while old lesions spontaneously heal and leave small scars in their place. Ty2 diabetes is a progressive condition with varying degrees of insulin deficiency. I am concerned when you mention that no other family members are aware of your diagnosis. Ty2 has a strong familial-genetic tendency. Multiple genes may be involved in this diagnosis (not all clearly identified); insulin resistance and genetic programming of the beta cells. The diagnosis does not take a vacation and following the cornerstones of self management assure a good healthy lifestyle. Coping can be facilitated by: Learn as much about diabetes self-management as you can, the American Diabetes Association can help, as well as your local certified diabetes education programs, Share what you have learned with your family and friends. I'm a firm believer in, "people generally want to help and support." .......the basic ABC's of DiabetesA1C<7%, Blood pressure<130/80mmHG, Total Cholesterol<200,HDL>50, LDL<100mg/dl activity of >150 minutes per week if you smoke-stop.
