Dear joyceful, It is possible that the neuropathy that you have was not caused by your diabetes. Ask a neurologist what tests can be done to rule out other causes. Sometimes doctors blame diabetes and don't test for other causes. For instance, I had neuropathy symptoms in my hands but testing showed it was the start of carpel tunnel syndrome. So, don't blame your diabetes without evidence that it actually is diabetic neuropathy,

Neuropathy runs in my family, but not all of us have diabetes. It is possible that you have peripheral neuropathy which is not caused by diabetes. Although I am diabetic my brother is not and he has horrible neuropathy. He is constantly tested due to our family history, but his sugar and A1c levels are always well within normal.

I had this same presentation. I have had neuropathy for 17 years, increasingly symptomatic. I was diagnosed with gastroparesis one day and finally, with diabetes the next, last April. Both my neurologist and endocrinologist are saying that this sort of "bass-ackwards" presentation of diabetes is very rare: so rare that there are not enough people for researchers to even study it, but that doctors are not even sure if this is some sort of separate disease that causes neuropathy FIRST and then diabetes. It's a new phenomonon that is just starting to get scientists' attention. Sounds like you are another one of these types of people.

What the expert said is true but and this is a big but since you werent testing your bs back then you dont know what they were. Many endo think diabetics are diabetics for a long time before they are dx. Neuropathy can be very painful and debilatating pain. All you can do now is control your bs to the best of your ability and get active.
