Dear coupe1, Byetta, also called Exenatide, is a biosynthetic form of the incretin hormone GLP-1 that is used to help improve glycemic control in people with Type 2 diabetes who are taking metformin and a sulfonylurea, but have not been able to get their blood sugars under control. It is given as a shot, twice per day prior to breakfast and supper. Multiple clinical trials looked at the safety of this drug. Since exenatide is eliminated by glomerular filtration followed by proteolytic degradation by the kidneys, it is not recommended for people who have a glomerular filtration rate of 30 or less. That would include people in stage IV kidney disease. People with mild to medium renal impairment still excrete exenatide OK. People with kidney disease and have elevated creatinines should not be on metformin, either.
