Hello,

People with diabetes can eat any and all cereals. It depends on what you like to eat. For the same volume, cereals with added sugar contain more carbohydrates and will increase your blood glucose more than the unsweetened ones. Also, you can find cereals made from 100% whole grains, which are going to have more fiber and other nutrients than the cereals made from processed corn and wheat flour, and won't raise your BG as rapidly.

Check the food labels on the box for the total amount of carbohydrate per serving and the ingredients for the type of grain used. Be sure to keep within your target amount of carbohydrates for the meal or snack. (A registered dietitian or certified diabetes educator can help you develop an eating plan if you don't have one.) This way, you can maintain good blood glucose control.

Enjoy!

The only cereal that doesn't affect my BGs is Nature's Path Organic Smart Bran with Psyllium & Oatbran. It has eleven grams net carbs per 2/3 Cup serving. I add a 1/3 Cup mixture of walnuts, pecans, and sliced almonds. With a few dried cranberries. AND I use Soy Slender Soy Milk with one gram net carb per 8 Oz. serving.

I have been getting good BG results after breakfast with a combination of Fiber One, chopped walnuts and flaxseed. My "recipe" is: 4 parts Fiber One, 2 parts chopped walnuts and 1 part flaxseed. This combo is very high in fiber and has zero grams sugar. Depending on your taste, you may want to experiment with the proportions and/or other ingredients. My carb targets are pretty low, so I eat half a cup or less of the mix with some milk and a few berries. If I'm still hungry, I eat some hard-boiled egg, cheese or more nuts because these don't add to the carb count. I hope this helps and would love to hear of other cereal mix "recipes."

I've found that the Quaker Granola cereals have a pretty good taste & don't spike me (could just be me, I guess).

Sadly, the field of diabetic nutrition, pharmacy and medicine is run by people without first-hand knowledge of what works for diabetics. Though it's not sad for them. They're healthy. lol. I found the answers from other diabetics very helpful and I appreciate it. I appreciate the other advice, much less however. Peace.

Well, I hate to say it, but the expert, Liz, didn't really tell us or gave us an idea what kind of cereal to eat. I mean that was the header; right? All she said was; look at the label, make sure you keep an eye on the carbs and the sugar content (in short). I could have done that and I am not an expert. I thought she would be give us a brand name or kind of cereal we should look for as part of her so called experience, and perhaps based on her research for this article.
