"I have just completed External Beam radiation for Prostate Cancer. How/will this affect my blood sugar?"

Type 1, Lantus 2 times daily, 71 years old. No symptoms of diabetes except high Hiac readings.

Radiation therapy itself will not affect your blood sugar; however, radiation can case loss of appetite, fatigue and nausea and vomiting. These symptoms can effect your food intake and thus effect your overall blood sugar. How often do you test your blood sugar? I would probably test more often if you feel like you are not eating as much as usual. This will help you evaluate the balance of your medication and blood sugar. You are taking Lantus, which is a background or basal insulin, so this insulin dose should not be effected. Your Lantus dose does not change based on the food you eat. Keep in contact with your diabetes care team during this process!
