Background Info Hide
I have type 1 diabetes and severe gastroparesis. I have a j-tube and gastric pacemaker. I'm having bowel spasms which makes using the j-tube impossible due to the pain. Although I can't eat anymore, I vomit numerous times a day. I know I'm getting dehydrated and I wonder if there is anything I can do to get hydrated/nutrition since I cant eat or use the tube?

Hello,

Gatroparesis, also called delayed gastric emptying, occurs when the stomach takes too long to empty its contents. Diabetes can damage the autonomic nervous system if blood glucose levels remain high over a long period of time.

If food lingers too long in the stomach, it can cause bacterial overgrowth from the fermentation of food. Gastroparesis can make diabetes worse by adding to the difficulty of controlling blood glucose.

The primary treatment goal is to regain control of blood glucose levels. Treatments include medications, changes in what and when you eat, and, in your case, feeding tubes and intravenous feeding.

An antiemetic can help with nausea and vomiting. Talk with your doctor about your concerns. He or she can evaluate your treatment plan and adjust it so that you can get hydrated and nourished.
