"I'm a 48 yr. old female and I'm not sure how to keep my Blood Sugar down with all my other medical problems. Could you please help me?"
Asked By: grumpymom

Background Info Hide
I have severe arthritis in my back and hips, so it's hard to walk. My Triglyerides are high. I take high doses of cholesterol meds so that is under control. I just can't figure out how to excerise, get Triglyerides down and keep my diabetes under control. I have FM, two small blockages in my arteries . I've had stomach surgery due to acid reflux and it is back again . Take migraine and stomach meds. Found out the other day that my blood pressure is high and I already take Lasix. Several other meds, to many to list. I just can't take arthritis or pain meds!!! I sometimes feel like one problem fights against the other.

I apologize for the delay in having an answer for you. It is quite a challenge to manage so many medical problems - but you are not alone. It is important to remember that pain and emotional stress affect your blood sugars - can cause it to be elevated even when you are taking your diabetes medications, following your meal plan and doing your daily activity. Stress & pain management are important issues in your total diabetes care. Often relaxation exercises like deep breathing, meditation or guided imagery will help stress and pain. High blood pressure & diabetes are often found together. Each a risk factor for the other. Blood sugar and blood pressure control are both important. Do not miss your medications and I would also recommend a home blood pressure machine to do ongoing monitoring of your control. There are lots of medications for blood pressure, so keep trying until you find one or a combination that provides good control w/ minimal side effects. Exercise or activity w/ arthritis is a challenge, but also part of the treatment! Check out your local Y for water classes - also doing sitting or armchair activity is often helpful and better tolerated than trying to walk. The goal is daily consistent movement, not winning marathons! I would strongly encourage you to attend a diabetes class if you haven't already. A support group may also be helpful for you - others often have solved the problems you are dealing with and can be very helpful when feeling overwhelmed. Thanks for seeking help through dLife- stay proactive & work closely with your health care provider.
